The pages generated by roundup are so wide now
that I cannot even use it anymore without

This can be fixed by removing topic, and moving
"depends on" and "superseded by" onto dedicated lines.
Consider also removing the "by:" field and just
making it field "Created:" contents "date by user."
I'll attach a mockup I did of this page in mozilla
composer.

Another try. This is getting closer, but is still
too wide. (Scrolling to the rightmost edge places
the r from "fresco" at the left edge. That's
better than we have now where I can only see a
little piece of blue along the top of the page at
all.)

Nicholas, while making the table just contain a
single input per row would help make it less wide,
I prefer to group things into a single row that
belong logically together.
I see two other ways to enhance the situation:
* put the title on top of the input instead of
in a separate column left to it
* restrict the inputs (notably the choices that
display the bugs by title). They could list the
bug id instead...

There's a bunch of things that we can do.
* remove "topic"
* collapse "by" into "created" field
* split "depends on" and "superseded by" into two
lines
* change "depends on" and "superseded by" to be a
list of bug numbers, similar to "add CC" which is
a list of user names.
* remove the dedicated title-columns
We should come to a consensus on each of these
points and possibly other I've missed before I can
create a good replacement bug.item.
1. remove topic.
We aren't using it for anything. I don't see
anyone proposing a purpose for it. I don't see a
need for any other multi-select for bugs that we
don't have now. Pro.
2. Minor change. If it makes things smaller, pro.
3 and 4. I prefer 4 over 3.
5. I'm worried that might look too ugly. If it can
be done in a pretty fashion, pro. Otherwise, con.

I don't know what topic is supposed to be used for
in the first place, so I won't rush to the
conclusion it can go. But I doubt that it should
be placed in front of components and platforms.
The later two should be more important in any
case, so they shouldn't be stuck after topic.
Moving depends on and superseded by into separate
lines might be a good idea too, especially since
we'll need to move those anyway once the new
dialog we requested for those upstream (a list of
the selected items with links and a checkbox to
remove them and a simple textwindow to add new
things to said list) is done.
PS: While we are at it: How about moving status
and resolution to a more prominet place?

Well, bug forms have two (or even three) sections:
the first describes the bug, i.e. it classifies it.
topics ('keywords'), components, platforms all
tell us what the bug is about. That should come first.
next comes the stuff that has more 'task' character:
the data associated with the processing of the bug report:
assigned to, priority, status.
Right now assigned to and priority are somewhere on top,
following this reasoning they may go down to the other
processing related fields, i.e. the row starting with
'assigned to' should be moved after the row starting with
'topic'.

I'm worried that putting the titles above their fields would look
visually distracting (read: ugly). If it doesn't look ugly, then it's a
fine way to reduce horizontal screen estate. I would just leave the
title in two columns.
I agree that "depends on" and "superseded by" need to be together, but I
don't see that they need to be next to each other horizontally.
If we do chose to switch to bug lists like "Add CC:" then what would we
make the help function do? The search page? A list of unresolved bugs?
You don't seriously plan to list *all* bugs, do you? |

I'd like to recommend eliminating the silly
scrollboxes for depends and superseded by, in
favour of a "cc list" type of multiselection, with
just the bug and task numbers. (ie.,
"bug21,task63,bug182").
Scrollboxes won't scale for future use.
